AFFINITY GROUP DETAILS—SATURDAY, JULY 13

WHAT IS AN AFFINITY GROUP?

An Affinity Group is a small, casual discussion group formed around a shared interest. Our goal in creating these groups for RP24 is to make it easy to connect with relations who share common interests—to spark new friendships and rekindle old ones! If you are interested in leading a group of your own, we would LOVE to have you! The only requirement to lead is that you come prepared to encourage discussion and connection around a topic in which you have interest. Please email Lisa Alfelt at [email protected].

CRAFT AND THE PRACTICE OF MAKING-Lead by Cole Alfelt-Eller (Donnette Clan) 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
There are a lot of skilled and passionate crafts people in our family, are you one of them? Do you like working with hands in general? Whether craft is a part of your career, a deep passion,  a simple hobby, or even just an interest! I want to talk about it! I am a jeweler and artist who has dedicated my entire adult life so far, to honing my craft and discussing craft theory. This will be a casual conversation about how the practice of making effects our lives.  It will also include an activity! I’m bringing a whole lot of yarn to do finger knitting! Which is a simple, easy to learn knitting technique that you can do just with your hands. So if you are excited to talk a lot or just interested in coming to sit, knit and listen, all are welcome! Come chat about craft and art making, and make strange little fiber structures!

ROSE ANCESTORS-Lead by Soni Werner (Midge Clan) 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

I am interested in sharing what I am learning about our Rose ancestors. I am building on the research done by Uncle Bob and Cousins Trinket Grubb Clark and Michelle Rose and others. In June 2024 I will visit Scotland to search places near Inverness where Pop-pop’s ancestors may have lived. I also hope to visit the Plymouth Mass area where Grandma Rose’s ancestors are buried. We may have ancestors that came over on the Mayflower in 1620! Let’s talk!

GARDEN HERITAGE-Lead by Tryn Rose Seley (Tryn Clan) 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Do you have flowers from Pop Pop and Grandma’s garden in your own yard? Do you have photos of their gardens? Would you like to propagate Uncle Arthur’s pink phlox or other long standing stock from the family property? Come share photos, stories, sights, scents, and cuttings from the plants we’ve loved in the Rose family for generations.

FAMILY HEALTH ISSUES—Michelle Rose (Donald Clan) 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Let's pool our knowledge in a confidential way to raise awareness of health issues that may run in the Rose family. Topics include glaucoma, folic acid insufficiency, atrial fibrillation and more. Dazzle your doctor with the amazing stats you learn.

HUMOR—Lead by Lori Odhner (Midge Clan) 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Our grandfather/great grandfather put food on the table with his wit. Some of those levity genes have made their way into the gene pool. This workshop—or rather play shop—will be about improv, games, and comedy.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI): HOW STORYTELLING CAN SAVE THE WORLD-Zach Odhner (Midge Clan) 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Which do you agree with more?
A) Machines are confusing. I'd rather deal with a human.
B) Humans are confusing. I'd rather deal with a machine.
Come learn about the hidden intelligence of storytelling, and the power of dialogue between humanity and machinery. Share your thoughts about how AI is changing the world and connect with other who are interested in the world of machine learning and generative AI. Whether you are a computer scientist or a creative writer, your human insight is what shapes the tools of your language into a cohesive story.

SAVING FAMILY HISTORY—Neil Genzlinger (Muriel Clan) 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
A lot of us have physical bits and pieces of Rose family history — Pop Pop’s various books and pamphlets, shoeboxes full of photographs, videos in various formats, beloved recipes, assorted memorabilia. Perhaps we should be putting our heads together to consider what among this paraphernalia, if anything, should be saved, and the best way to inventory and preserve it. Informal discussions often focus on Pop Pop, but others in that generation left paper trails too, and now each of the 12 children’s families have their own archival issues. How are they dealing with them? It would also be interesting to hear from family members who are thinking about their own legacies while alive. What provisions are all you painters making for your works after you’re gone?  A wide-ranging discussion of who has what, how it’s being preserved, and whether the R.O.S.E. group might play a role in guarding this past.
